Series: Complicated Conversations: Truth in Genesis
Topic: Diversity
Text: Genesis 1:26-27,10:32, Revelation 5:9-10
SCRIPTURE:
- Can you think of other passages which refer to this “complicated conversation”?
- Dr. Brian Dennert says it is helpful when we read the word “nations” to think “ethnicities.”
- Read the passages above, plus Genesis 17:4–6; 18:18 and Acts 17:26, inserting “ethnicities” for “nations.”
- Genesis 1:26-28 and Revelation 5:9-10 point to unity and diversity at the beginning and the end. What about this in between time? How are we to live?
ACCOUNTABILITY:
- When we hear the word diversity, we often think of racial diversity. What other kinds of diversity should we be thinking about?
- Read the vision of Micah 4:1-3. Why do we need to talk about this issue?
- We believe that every person on this planet was created in the image of God. That means every person is of great value to God. Is that always how “we” (meaning countries as well as individuals) act?
- Why do you think fear can be part of this conversation?
TRANSFORMATION:
- It’s been said that Sunday mornings are the most segregated hours of the week. Do you agree? If so, why do you think that is true?
- It is often our natural tendency to “stick with our own” and avoid people who look or think differently from us. Is that God’s best for our lives and our land?
- Count how many acquaintances and close friends you have of different ethnicities. Outside of family, how many close friends do you have of a different generation, or faith or political position? Are you comfortable with your answers? Ask God if you need to change those numbers?
- We live in a nation divided by so many issues. While you cannot change that landscape, what is God telling you to change in your world today?
