The Mystery of Suffering | Scripture Reference: Job 38-42
Discuss the following questions with your Small Group:

  1. How has the Mystery of Suffering sermon series helped you think about the suffering that you and others encounter in our world?
  2. What are the areas in your life where you don’t fully understand how something works but you choose to put your trust in the knowledge and work of others? What causes you to trust in these individuals? How might this “human trust” relate to trusting God when we are going through suffering?
  3. Read Job 38:1-39. What stands out to you as God talks about his work in the natural world and animal world? How can this help you think about who God is in the midst of your suffering?
  4. God never tells Job why he is suffering, so why do you think Job is okay with the response that God gives him (as shown in Job’s words in 42:1-6)?
  5. It is one thing to say what Job says in 42:2-6. What do you think a life looks like that believes these sorts of truths (esp. 42:2-3, 6)?  Share your thoughts.
  6. People sometimes say they can’t believe in God because of all the suffering they see in the world. How might you respond to this statement in light of this passage, the book of Job, or this sermon series?
  7. Who do you know that is going through a hard time?  What have you learned from this series that can help you support them?
  8. Take time to pray for people in and outside of your Small Group that are suffering.

Truth in Genesis

What’s truth? We live in a society where people tend to define their own truths, using their own guidelines. Where values and beliefs are spun in such a way that makes us question if God’s way really is the best.

But does a Universal Truth exist? We believe there is and it’s been recorded in roughly 757,000 words. We invite you to join us as we open that source, God’s Word, and equip you to have complicated conversations with those who are defining their own truth.
